We still have some MLB openers on tap today, let’s take a look at a couple of them for today’s MLB Picks

Season Record 1-0, +0.83 Units

Rockies at Marlins

Rockies ML (+165 bet365)

Yes the Rockies were historically horrendous last season as they finished at 43-119. On top of that they played much worse on the road, where they went just 18-63. So why in the world pick them here?

Well for one thing, I expect them to play much better in 2026. That is a really low bar of course, but I can squint and see a respectable lineup here. Hunter Goodman popped 31 homers in 2025 and one-time top draft pick Mickey Moniak had a 110 wRC+ and 24 homers. Throw in SS Exequiel Tovar and Brenton Doyle who look back now after injury plagued downticks in 2025 and there’s the makings of an offense, even at sea level. And about that…part of the Rockies historic road problem is the adjustment from hitting at Coors and then playing at a “normal” elevation.

Well, they won’t have that problem today, or all weekend for that matter since they have not played at home yet.

Kyle Freeland takes the mound and while he's hardly an ace, he’s a solid vet. He grew up in Denver, but like everyone, he pitches much better away from Coors. He had a 4.37 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 2025, yeah not great but passable. And he gets about as manageable a task as there is right now as the Marlins have one of the worse lineups in MLB. Their best hitter Kyle Stowers is on the IL. Not one hitter in today’s lineup projects for a wRC+ higher than 106 (Owen Caissie somehow) or 19 homers (Agustin Ramirez).

In the Marlins favor, their starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara looked almost fully back to his old form in the later stages of 2025. From July 23 on he went 7-3 with a 3.13 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 77.2 innings. At even money I’d expect Sandy and the Marlins to prevail, but at the significant plus odds we can get, give me the Rockies.

Royals at Braves

Royals ML (+125 BetRivers)

Just a quick hunch on this one but I like the Royals to outperform in 2026 and I really expect a big year out of their starting pitcher today, Cole Ragans. When healthy, Ragans is maybe the fourth best SP in MLB after the Skubal, Skenes, Crochet troika.

If it's not Ragans, it might be the Braves starter today, Chris Sale. But beyond Sale, it's just a mess in Atlanta. They are down projected starting DJ Jurrickson Profar due to a PED suspension, as well as starting SS Ha-Seong Kim with an injury. They’ve also lost 60% of their projected rotation, but that won’t impact them today.

We have an even pitching matchup and two good offenses led respectively by superstars Bobby Witt Jr and Ronald Acuna Jr. I like the Royals at the price of a mini “upset.”
